How to Choose the Right TIG Welding Glove

Precision is the priority in TIG applications. Unlike MIG welding, where heat protection is king, TIG requires a "second skin" feel so you can manipulate the torch and precise-feed filler rods. The material you choose dictates that balance between dexterity and heat resistance.

Kidskin (Goat)

Kidskin is the gold standard for TIG welders. It provides the highest level of dexterity and tensile strength, allowing for maximum tactile sensitivity. If you need to feel the wire, this is your best choice.

Deerskin

Deerskin is incredibly soft and pliable. It molds to the shape of your hand over time, offering all-day comfort. While slightly thicker than kidskin, it offers excellent dexterity and heat protection.

Pigskin

Pigskin is unique because it withstands oil and wet conditions better than other leathers. It remains soft even after getting wet and drying out, making it a durable favorite for shop environments.

Frequently Asked Questions About TIG Gloves

What is the difference between MIG and TIG gloves?

MIG gloves are typically thick, loose-fitting, and heavily padded to protect the hands from high heat and heavy spatter. TIG gloves are thin, snug-fitting, and unlined to provide the "tactile sensitivity" needed to feed filler rod. You cannot effective TIG weld with MIG gloves as you lose the fine motor control required for the process.

Why are TIG welding gloves so thin?

TIG gloves are designed to be thin to maximize dexterity. In TIG welding, the heat is more concentrated, and there is usually no spatter. This allows welders to trade the heavy insulation of a MIG glove for thinner leathers (like kidskin) that allow them to feel the weld puddle and manipulate the torch with precision.

Can you Stick weld with TIG gloves?

It is generally not recommended to Stick weld with TIG gloves. Stick welding (SMAW) creates significant spatter and higher radiant heat that can quickly ruin thin TIG leather or burn your hands. For Stick welding, switch to a thicker Cowhide or Elk skin glove with insulation.

Do I need lined or unlined TIG gloves?

Most TIG welders prefer unlined gloves for maximum sensitivity. However, if you are welding at higher amperages (200A+) or for extended periods, you may want a glove with a foam-lined back to protect your knuckles from radiant heat without sacrificing fingertip sensitivity.
