The electrode is the part of the plasma cutter torch that initiates the arc with an enormous surge of energy when the trigger is activated, taking it from cold to intensely hot instantly. The dynamic temperature change occurs from extremely hot gas safely and efficiently running past the electrode.

Note that the starting and stopping of the plasma cutter causes the wear on these electrodes. Check the electrodes often between uses to make sure they have not eroded beyond use. Trouble with starting the arc could be the result of a worn electrode, and continued use could cause major damage to the torch.
