The LCD component of these auto-darkening welding helmets distorts the most harmful light waves emitted from the welding arc by manipulating the direction of the light waves, adjusting the contrast enough to prevent damage to a welder's eyes.
A series of vertically and horizontally oriented polarized lenses then work in unison with the distorting LCD to further disorient the light waves. As a matter of safety, most auto-darkening lenses are set to polarize light by 90 degrees when not powered on, keeping the lens dark in the event of a power failure.
