Miller Big Blue 450 Duo CST (Mitsubishi) 907477

I've been using this machine on job for about 6 months. I am a professional UA pipe welder at a refinery. We have been using this machine to weld 6010 roots with 7018 fill and caps, and tig for chrome and stainless. The idea of 2 arcs from one machine is why the boss decided on this machine. The Good: This machine will start faster than any other machine on a cold North Dakota morning than any other machine on the job. Fairly quiet = low speed diesel. Two guys can roll this machine on flat ground when its on the optional trailer. Does a good job on 6010 up hand roots. This machine is producing X-ray quality welds. The So So: My biggest complaint is the inverter welders that they use in this machine. I find that 7018 on these CST 280 is lacking. Miller says there is a hot start built in but I don't see it. Caps using the CST 280 are not as smooth as most machines I use. When using 1/8 rod or bigger in position sticking the rod becomes alot worse if set to XX18 Smooth. To counter act that I have to set it to XX18 Stiff. This makes the bead more choppy looking. Overall I would say that the CSTs are average industrial machines. Decent all around but not great. The Bad: The inverters used in this machine run around 10 amps hotter than most. There is not a digital display for amps. The difference for 5 amps on the dial seems to be just turning the dial a hair. And not a big one! We have been given 14 pin remotes as of lately and this helps dial in the heat a little better. Other Stuff: Millers website advertises this machine as having 3 phase but as far as I can tell this is all internal to power the 2 inverter welding power supplies. On the current job we also have a XMT 350 and another separate CST 280. The XMT runs great and is one of the standards that I judge most inverter machines. The separate CST runs the same as I described above. This machine will work for 90 percent of the welders out there. Just not my favorite.
